The Best Video Game Remakes & Remasters of 2024

  • PRG

2024 will be another bumper year for gaming, and while we are all excited about the plethora of new releases on the horizon, there are plenty of remasters and remakes to look forward to; here are a few of the best that should be on your radar.

Why We Love Remasters & Remakes

Remasters and remakes are so beloved by gamers because they bring back the nostalgia and joy you felt when you first booted up the game years and years ago. Remakes and remasters also welcome new fans into old franchises.

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater

Metal Gear Solid (MGS) has been a fan-favorite franchise for many years but has lost its spark in recent years. However, this title is a remaster and remake of the incredibly popular and successful Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, released in 2004.

With a similar storyline to the original release, we will once again see Naked Snake as he attempts to stop a Russian super weapon from wreaking havoc. It will be released on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, meaning we will undoubtedly see MGS in a way we have never experienced before.

Silent Hill 2

Silent Hill is another franchise that players outside the horror genre often overlook. However, in 2022, we got the announcement that a remake of the 2001 masterpiece was in the works, with a leak supposedly confirming a May release date.

Details are still scarce on whether or not there will be new gameplay, but we know there will be a revised combat system in Silent Hill 2. In only a few short weeks, we can rejoin James Sunderland as he takes the perilous journey to find his wife in Silent Hill.

Braid: Anniversary Edition

First released between 2008 and 2010, Braid was one of the premier indie games of the time and became a benchmark many indie developers attempted to replicate. This time-bending platform puzzler had unique gameplay and an even better storyline, and a more modern version was the obvious next step.

The anniversary edition was meant to be released in 2021, but with that now passed, the much-anticipated wait is over. April 30 is now set to be the release date, and with no delay announcements on the cards, we haven’t long to wait.

Until Dawn

Released in 2015, Until Dawn quickly gained popularity thanks to its exceptionally well-done horror-drama story. Featuring a butterfly-effect style of play, the game follows eight people as they try to survive Blackwood Mountain.

The fate of each character is determined by the choices you make throughout the game, making Until Dawn a truly unique gaming experience. 2024 will see us finally getting a remastered version for the PS5 and PC. If you haven’t played it before, strap yourself in for an adventure you won’t soon forget.

Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD

Due to delays and the shutting down of the Nintendo eStore, we haven’t been able to join Luigi on any new adventures recently. However, Luigi’s Mansion 2 is releasing this year on the Nintendo Switch to solve all of your Luigi woes.

Your job is to conquer multiple, incredibly diverse levels to find the missing shards of the Dark Moon. While the gameplay and enemies won’t be unfamiliar to fans, the updated graphics and style are a much-needed change for this franchise.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

Coming to the Nintendo Switch at the end of May, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is a highly-anticipated remake of a game that often flies under the radar. With the original game released in 2000, 24 years is more than long enough to wait for a remake.

Fans expect the same story and gameplay but with upgraded graphics and features. As mentioned, Paper Mario isn’t the most popular series in the Mario franchise, but there are big hopes that this remake will change that.

Max Payne 1 & 2

While there is no exact release date yet, and there is still a lot of speculation around the game, Max Payne 1 and 2 is set to be remade into one modernized title. We know that Remedy is handling the project and is the genius behind the Allan Wake series.

Details are still exceptionally scarce, but if you have ever played the original titles, you know that a remake of these spectacular action games is nothing short of an instant classic.

The Art of Remastering

Remasters and remakes of classic games are often some of the best titles you will play. This is done across the spectrum of gaming, with casinos and casino game developers even redesigning and refreshing their games to breathe new life into the retro gaming online experience. You can never go wrong with taking an all-time classic and adding a massive dose of modern technology to it, and these are a few of the games that will prove that this year.
